About Homeschooling

In Iowa, there are multiple ways to legally homeschool.

A parent can choose to homeschool in association with the local school district. To do so, a parent needs to complete a form for Competent Private Instruction (CPI).

In homeschooling with a CPI, the student can choose to take classes and/or participate in extracurricular activities with dual enrollment.

CPI can also include participation in the Home School Assistance Program (HSAP) if the district supports one.

Homeschooling with a CPI does include specific state requirements such as quarterly contacts with a certified teacher as well as state testing or a portfolio.

In Iowa, families can choose to homeschool independently (Independent Private Instruction - IPI). This manner of homeschooling has no involvement with the school district with classes and/or extracurricular activities.

The options to homeschool in Iowa are complicated and can be difficult to understand. The HSAP teachers are available to help you with your decisions about education. Please contact us with any questions.
